Just days before his passing, Richard, whose birthday was on July 12, shared his plans for a simple 76th birthday celebration. He joked about skipping traditional cake in favor of a zucchini, reflecting his vegetarian lifestyle, and mentioned he might indulge in “maybe one Pepperidge Farm Milano cookie.”
Though his birthday plans were simple, Richard conveyed a deep appreciation for life. “I feel good!” he shared, expressing his gratitude for being alive. “I’ll spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is to help people.”

Though he maintained this commitment to helping others, Richard had largely stepped away from the public eye starting in 2014. By November 2016, he had closed his iconic Beverly Hills fitness studio, Slimmons. This sudden withdrawal from public life sparked speculation and concern about his well-being.
Rumors circulated that he was being held at home against his will. However, Richard and his brother Lenny dismissed these claims, clarifying that he simply needed time to rest.
The Simmons family’s spokesperson, Tom, had also addressed the situation at the time, “Richard made a choice. To live a more private life. If he decides to come back, he’ll come back.”
Despite these rumors and his retreat from the spotlight, Richard’s legacy remained strong. Tragically, on July 13, he passed away at age 76.
Emergency services were called to his residence shortly before 10 in the morning after he reportedly fell in his bathroom. His housekeeper found him unresponsive, prompting an urgent call for medical assistance.

The LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division responded but did not suspect foul play. Further details provided by law enforcement indicated that Richard’s fall had occurred the night before his death and may have been connected to his passing. Authorities continued their investigation into the precise circumstances surrounding the incident.
More details about Richard’s final moments emerged. He had shared a spirited message on his Facebook page that showcased his enduring charm and vivacity. With a playful photo captioned “Hello gorgeous! Please don’t rain on my parade,” he greeted his followers with his signature enthusiasm.
This final post quickly resonated with thousands of fans, garnering numerous likes and shares, and became a poignant last memory for many of his admirers. His words and vibrant expression in the photo remained a testament to the joyful and uplifting spirit he carried throughout his life.
Alongside his spirited message, Richard also thanked everyone on Facebook for their warm wishes on his 76th birthday showing his connection to the community until the end. “I never got so many messages about my birthday in my life! I am sitting here writing emails. Have a most beautiful rest of your Friday,” he wrote.
